Some Corps Members have expressed divergent views on the fight against corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The corps members expressed their views in an interview with FREEDOM SUNRISE on Friday during the first-ever Nigerian Youths Walk Against Corruption, across the 36 states of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The walk, which was in collaboration of the EFCC, with the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) and the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports started at about 7:46 am from the anti-graft agency’s Wuse office.

For Ahmed Patience, though EFCC is trying in the fight against the menace, they need to try harder, adding that the commission needs to set an example with anyone caught in corrupt practices in order to send a strong message about its stand against corruption.
“We actually need to try harder to see that we eradicate this thing called corruption in Nigeria., because it’s actually not helping the country to grow, like our economy is down because of corruption and all. In all the parastatals we need to sit down, lets sit, lay good example. Let’s be the change we want to see. I think that’s where eradicating corruption can start from. Let’s be the change we want to see. Let’s say no to things that we know are actually abnormal. Let’s say no to corruption.
On whether the commission is fighting corruption to the fullest, Ahmed said: “Well, I will say they’re trying, but they really need to put more effort.”
Probed further on what areas the commission needs to put in more effort, she added “They need to set an example, like when somebody is being caught in misappropriation of funds and all of that, the person should be punished, whatever level the person is, he should be punished. By that people will know that the commission is serious about the fight corruption.”
For Olajuwon Temilayin, with the first ever Nigerian youths walk, corruption will surely be kicked out of the country, though it is a gradual process.
“Actually, we can’t say corruption has been fought or has not yet been fought. Its something that is a gradual process, which I believe in one way or the other, through awareness, through actions that have been take so far by the current president and the EFCC organizing today’s programme. With today’s programme I believe corruption will be kicked out of Nigeria.
On whether the EFCC has fought corruption to an appreciable extent, Temileyin said “the commission has fought corruption to an extent, and I believe it’s not something that can easily stopped, because it’s not easy to be dealt with in a day. As we keep moving, I believe we will overcome it totally.”
Another corps member who gave his name as Mathew Kalu said: “for every one that died as a result of bad road, which money was for rehabilitation was given, but was not done, its corruption. For every one person that is unemployed when they are opportunities and some people are hoarding them, its corruption. For every one woman that died during child birth as a result of lack of facilities in hospital is as a result of corruption.
“Nigerians are using our own money to develop other countries, so this work is an all-important walk. It’s a sensitization walk. This is a cankerworm that we must tackle.
“I want to urge all Nigerians to stay away from every form of corruption, from office bribery, police bribery, jobs bribery, sex for marks, cyber fraud. Stay away from all of this and Nigeria will be developed. I believe EFCC is trying in its fight against corruption”
