Maiduguri: Fire Razes GSM Market

Shop owners are counting their loses after property worth millions of naira were destroyed following a fire outbreak that engulfed several shops at the Maiduguri GSM market late Thursday night.



The fire, according to reports, which started around 8:00 pm lasted for several hours was eventually put out by firefighters, security personnel and members of the community.

The market popularly called Kasuwar Jagol is located at Post Office area of the metropolis, providing business spaces to thousands of traders and artisans in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Borno Fire Service, Ambursa Pindar, said that the service deployed five firefighting vehicles to the scene of the fire.

Pindar said that the service would conduct an assessment to ascertain the extent of the damage.

A cell phone vendor and an eye witness, Abdulrahman Tahir said the fire started in one of the shops and engulfed other shops in the market.

He lamented that a number of traders lost their goods to the fire.

Reports say armed security personnel were deployed to the market to prevent hoodlums from looting.

Recall that two fire incidents had occurred last month at the Ochanja market and Omagba Phase two all in Onitsha, Anambra State.
