Remembering the Quintessential Media Practitioner, Mansur Lawal.

By Richard Anyebe

On September 26, 2018, it will be exactly four (4) years that Kaduna and Gombe states lost a diligent Journalist and an astute spokesman, Alhaji Mansur Lawal. Until his death, Alhaji Lawal was the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Gombe State Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.

The late Mansur exuded a humble and convivial nature with many that knew him. He was always accessible to his colleagues despite his position as the Governor’s spokesman, a norm not known and practiced by media practitioners upon rising to higher responsibilities.

He was close to former Governor Abubakar Habu Hashidu and became the special Assistant on Media and Publicity in 2010 to Danjuma Goje. He was later reappointed to the same position when Dankwambo became governor in 201 1.

Mansur Lawal was born in 1960 to the family of Lawal Ismail of Zaria, in Kaduna state. Lawal started his education at the age of six and obtained a first degree in Linguistics (Hausa) in 1985 from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and a post graduate diploma in Journalism from the same institution. His journalism into the interesting world of journalism began in 1987 as a Reporter with The New Nigerian and Gaskiya Tafi kwabo(GTK), a Hausa publication.

The late Lawal’s outstation assignment as a correspondent started in the then Bauchi State in 1987. He became the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, and upon creation of Yobe State, he was moved to Damaturu.

He was transferred to Gombe State in 1997 to open The New Nigerian office, and became the first Chair of the Correspondents’’ Chapel in the state, created on October 1, 1996.
One notable thing about the late Mansur Lawal was that he was well-groomed in his job, thus having to carve a niche for himself as a prolific writer. He was 54 years old when he died. He was survived by two wives and nine children.
